Dr. Ofra Benny
Head, Lab of Nanomedicine and Tumor Microenvironment,Institute for Drug Research, School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Dr. Ofra Benny is a senior lecturer and a head of research laboratory at the Institute for Drug Research, School of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Medicine in the Hebrew University. Dr. Benny’s lab focuses on cancer research and drug development based on synthetic and natural compounds. Her lab multidisciplinary approach includes the development of novel nanomedicine tools for drug delivery specific for cancer and key components of the tumor microenvironment. Dr. Benny received her B.Sc in Biotechnology Engineering from the Technion, Israel in 2001. She completed her Ph.D in Biotechnology Engineering with Magna cum laude in 2006. Her doctorate studies focused on the development of drug-delivery system for the treatment of brain tumors. Following her doctoral studies Dr. Benny intensified her research interests in the field of nanomedicine and cancer therapy focusing on drug development of anti-angiogenic compounds which block blood supply to tumors which trigger their death. For this, she joined as postdoctoral fellow the leading lab of the late Dr. Judah Folkman, the pioneer of angiogenesis field, at the Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. During her postdoctoral Dr. Benny developed an oral formulation for an anti cancer drug which was previously not available orally and demonstrated drug’s ability to prevent tumor growth and invention. Her work was published at several scientific journal including the prestige journal Nature Biotechnology which also featured her publication in the journal cover.
